Common questions

I can't hear the start timer

Check that PLAY ON SILENT is on in Settings › Start timer and that the volume is up. If headphones or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, the beeps play there.

How accurate is the distance to the line?

With the phone's own GPS, expect a few meters, about one to two seconds at normal speed. Ping each end as close as you safely can. An external GPS receiver mounted with a clear view of the sky gives the best result. Settings › GPS shows the current accuracy.

The lift meter shows nothing

The meter compares your course with your last tack, so it needs one tack to learn. Until then the screen shows LEARNING.

How do I start the timer from my Apple Watch?

Tap START on the watch, or use Double Tap. On Apple Watch Ultra you can set the Action button to ShiftSail in the Watch settings; then one press starts the timer and the next one syncs it.

There are no coordinates for the marks

Open Course › PING MARK and press the button as you sail past the buoy. If you skip it, ShiftSail saves the spot where you round each mark, so laylines work from the next lap.

Where are my races stored?

On your iPhone and in your own iCloud. There is no account. Read more in the privacy policy.

Can I use ShiftSail to navigate?

No. ShiftSail is a racing aid. The map is simplified and does not show depths or hazards. Always navigate with official charts and your boat's equipment.
